Monthly Observing Challenge

M42 orion nebula

M42 Orion Nebula

• This is a program designed to introduce you to various objects in the night sky, practice making observations and/or images, hopefully connect with other members, participate in observing sessions, and having some fun along the way.

• Participation is NOT mandatory. In fact, members can choose each month whether to participate (or not)!

• Each month a new observing challenge object will be revealed at the monthly NEWSTAR meeting and then posted on the NEWSTAR website.

• Members will have one month (meeting date to meeting date) to complete the observing challenge.

• Visual observations and Imaging will be allowed. You can mix and match!

• The following types of instruments may be used – eyes, binocular, telescope (excluding remote telescopes), camera, CCD etc. that allows for sufficient observation of the object.

• Device-aided equipment will be allowed.

• Observations and images must use the NEWSTAR observing challenge form for submission (on the NEWSTAR website).

• Observations and images must be emailed to Tom Eisch: tom.eisch@new-star.org by the following month’s club meeting to qualify for each month’s challenge.

• Awards will be presented at the end of the year to all those who participate!

Additional Notes:

• Objects will range from easy to moderately difficult. Some objects may require darker sky sites or larger aperture equipment than you may have. (Observing sessions, club telescopes, and member get togethers can help you out)!

• Images/Observations/Sketches submitted may be used on our website and at meetings only with permission.

• Observations/Images DO NOT need to be professional! Describe what you see to the best of your ability. Don’t stress over it!
